Interview with Cowboy Gus Trent

Gus Trent, Story by The Sungoddess

There’s something very peaceful and liberating about being on a horse ranch. If you are a horse enthusiast, experienced or novice rider, then the Gus Trent Ranch located at 8919 Pitt Road in Plant City, Florida is the place for you. On my recent trip to GTR, I had the opportunity to observe Mr. Trent, his ranch-hand Kaitlin and the horses in action. I also had the chance to interact with “Remo” (the lead horse), while learning what it takes to own and operate a horse ranch.

SG: What is the history of Gus Trent Ranch (GTR)?

GT: Well, before I tell you the history of GTR, I always like to tell a little about myself. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and always had this dream about being a cowboy. I did not grow up with horses and prior to 2010, had never owned or knew anything about horses. In 2010, I was in the Army at the time and stationed at MacDill AFB. During that time, a co-worker introduced me to her horses and in June of that year (2010), I bought my very first horse. I didn’t know how to ride or anything about training. Then, I just fell in love with horses and had a dream about doing rodeos.

In 2011, I flew to Kansas City, Mo where there was an all black rodeo. I asked to help out and that’s how I was introduced to rodeos. At that point, I started working with horses more and in 2013, I decided to do my own rodeo. So, in 2013, I held my first rodeo called “Rodeo Fest” at the Florida State Fairgrounds. That same year, I went into business and opened Gus Trent Ranch. It was then I started sharing my love of horses with the public. I’ve also put on a rodeo for the last 4 years for the City of Pinellas Annual Rib Cook Off which is held in October.

SG: So tell us about Rodeo Fest.

GT: Well, it started in 2013 and is held the last Saturday in August at the Florida State Fairgrounds. This year, it will take place on August 25th, from 6-8 pm. During the fest, we will have Calf Roping, Bull Riding, Mounted Shooting, Barrell Racing and Full Horse Relay.

Lastly, I’m also wanting to teach and get minority kids interested in rodeo skills.

Well, there you have it folks! Visit the Gus Trent Horse Ranch and mark your calendars for Rodeo Fest on August 25th at the Florida State Fairgrounds. It will be an experience like none other.
