Not to be Written-Off

Charles Krauthammer has died. He’s written about it and said as much publicly that he's dying, and has come to grips with the fact, having made peace with that prognosis. Good for him. He is obviously a tough old warhorse, having survived and thrived these last forty-plus years paralyzed   from the neck down, the victim of a diving board accident his first year of medical school at Harvard Medical. I am not, nor have I ever been a fan of Krauthammer. But I will admit that there is a certain admiration, from a man to man perspective, for anyone who can look at his realized demise with courage. Charles Krauthammer is a conservative— fiscally… socially… politically. And from what I have learned of him over several years now of reading many of his opinions and seeing him on political shows as a talking head, his brand of conservatism makes for bad public policy in a nation that purports to support individual freedoms- for everybody- as its standard to bear. I should clarify by saying that I don’t hate conservatism in a vacuum, there are some things that I am more conservative about than many of my closest friends and associates, but I do despise and loathe anything: policy, speech or action that is hateful. And in today’s climate it is the political right that seems to have adopted an attitude of “my way or the highway”. And their extremes are showing up lately as pronounced as anything seen since The Jim Crow South in a lot of ways. In fact, since the on-set of Rush Limbaugh in the late 80’s and the growth of conservative talk radio, a certain level of hate has become quite the cottage-industry as many of these guys benefit from a veritable cash-cow in spewing a lot of this trash. You would probably be amazed to discover just how much money some of these ‘little Goebbels’ can command. From a list that consists of the likes of a Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Michael Savage (the little Weiner), and Glenn Beck, nobody has to scrape by on less than ten million dollars annually, with Limbaugh raking in well over five times that much. In fact it’s become so lucrative, that you’ll find many of them often fighting amongst themselves to see who can be more outrageous than one of the others. Savage and Levin are regularly at each other’s throats. I don’t put Krauthammer in the same range as these clowns, as he himself no doubt sees himself more on the William F. Buckley-George Will, intellectualist side of the debate. Whatever... for me- same song, different verse. But these other boys are trying to get paid. To Hell with anything that proposes a reasoned approach to governance- anything that would lead toward bringing the nation together for a new and growing national peace and prosperity. These boys are true capitalist. And they have decided to turn that old axiom “if it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense” thing on its head. For them— “if it does make dollars, it needn’t make any sense at all…”.

Of course, there is no show if there is no audience. And the fact that these types are able to carry such clout is a reflection of the sad and sick mind-set of so much of our nation. Whoever coined the phrase “two wrongs don’t make a right” must have been clairvoyant, as today’s political Right is living-proof there’s no need to stop at two, you can throw in as many as you want.
