Intelligent, Effective, President Obama

Intelligent, Effective, President Obama

I enjoyed listening to the President deliver his final State of the Union speech as I believe most loyal Americans did.  Let’s face it, he’s just a great orator. Ironically, when I listen to my Republican friends talk about what they really believe, they aren’t that far from the center either. I believe secretly, a great majority of educated Republicans are center right as most Democrats are center left and if that’s the case, then the extremes of both parties are outliers, you know, “the base.”

Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina sure sounded center right to me in her rebuttal to the President. “There is more than enough blame to go around. We as Republicans need to own that truth. We need to recognize our contributions to the erosion of the public trust in America’s leadership. We need to accept that we’ve played a role in how and why our government is broken.”

She further stated “We must fix our broken immigration system. That means stopping illegal immigration. And it means welcoming properly vetted legal immigrants, regardless of their race or religion. Just like we have for centuries.”  For me, if that’s not center right, I don’t know what is.

Although I knew this was not the appropriate time, I really wish the President had called out the dastardly deed of Mitch McConnell, who really started all of this bitter back biting, contemptuous, type rhetoric that is what our political system is made up of today with his secret meeting and contracts at the onset of President Obama’s term. Instead the President took the high road when he said “one of the few regrets of my presidency -- that the rancor and suspicion between the parties has gotten worse instead of better.” I believe Mitch McConnell owes America and the political process an apology. He and his political cronies and lobbyist money has severely damaged our political process. It was disrespectful of the presidency and perpetuated racism. For seven years this toxic atmosphere is what has been fueling America. It’s like putting regular unleaded gasoline in an engine that requires premium gas only.  He should not be allowed to throw a stone that large and do that much damage and simply hide his hand behind his back.

Now back to my Republican friends. Some believe four more years with a Democratic President is just what the country needs, so there won’t be any craziness trying to undo the Obama accomplishments. Others believe that a center right Republican president could bring the country in line with their conservative values on some social issues without isolating minorities. However, what none of them agree on, is the role of diversity in their party which I believe could be the Republicans demise.

The challenge for both parties to win the White House is getting their voters to the polls. While the Republicans have done everything to prevent minorities from voting they have enhanced the opportunities for white communities to vote more easily. The President stated “We’ve got to make it easier to vote, not harder. We need to modernize it for the way we live now.”  Seems like the Republicans have done just that, made it easier for their constituents to vote.  The Democrats need to find a way for to undue the damage that has been done by the Republican Party to the average voter.

I am so very proud to have had an African-American President, one with a strong educated and active sister at his side. Also, one that is a Harvard graduate and first and foremost a constitutional scholar. He has served America well. I believe he will go down in history as the most effective president of all times.
