Oregon standoff or white privilege?

It’s been several weeks and the Oregon Standoff continues to be in the back shadows of media rooms, last column, 3rd story down, scroll to the bottom page type story. A bunch of white guys with rifles and guns take over a government wildlife refuge, and We allow it. They have been “asked” to leave by a local sheriff and yet the saga continues.

Almost 50 years ago in May of 1967 the Black Panther Party, armed with rifles pointing upwards, took over the state capital in California to protest a racially charged bill about to be passed.seale bobby Bobby Seale of the Panthers, spoke these words. “Black people have begged, prayed, petitioned, demonstrated, and everything else to get the racist power structure of America to right the wrongs which have historically been perpetuated against black people. All of these efforts have been answered by more repression, deceit and hypocrisy. As the aggression of the racist American government escalates in Vietnam, the police agencies of America escalate the oppression of black people throughout the ghettos of America. Vicious police dogs, cattle prods, and increased patrols have become familiar sights in black communities. City Hall turns a deaf ear to the pleas of black people for relief from this increasing terror.” From the book by Hugh Pearson’s, The Shadow of the Panther.

They were escorted out after entering the legislative chambers which was in session without incident but later arrested about a mile outside of town all to be charged with felonies, later to be reduced but charged nevertheless. Why won’t the sheriff or FBI just escort Oregon militia out of town like they did us almost 50 years ago?

While these words spoken by Bobby Seale were about the oppression of Black Americans, it was a grievance he got to voice, the same as the Oregon militia. The difference is the Oregon militia, having stated their grievances, have been allowed to stay in the name of “oh just let them be”. African-Americans are advised to let the justice system handle it, and I believe the same should apply to the Oregon militia.

America continues to fail on civil rights and our legal system is still stacked in favor of whites. Still waiting to see this Oregon thing play out. Believe me, this is not a good trend. Stay tuned!
