Andrew Gillum's Thank You Tour

Andrew Gillum's Thank You Tour

Robin Lockett, Hillsborough Black Caucus & Mayor Andrew Gillum

Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum, who is the Mayor of Tallahassee, revisited the 4 largest cities in the State of Florida; Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Orlando and Miami on a Thank You Tour.  With just a few thousand more votes, Florida progressive voters would have been boasting of electing their first African American Governor, ever.  Since 1999 the Democratic Party has not held the governor's seat and despite the gallant effort, the coveted prize slipped away again.  The good thing is Florida Democrats still made history!  For the first time an African American received the nomination from the Democratic Party as it's candidate for governor.   Also, for the first time the Florida Governor's race pulled in almost as many votes as a presidential race, more than 8 million, which is astounding. This is the  first time the governor's race has been this close.

A very special thanks goes out to Robin Lockett, the President of Hillsborough County Black Democratic Caucus.  Lockett jumped  on board with Gillum very early in spite of the none believers and nay sayers.  More than a year ago, Robin Lockett brought Mayor Gillum into our radio station,  N-TOUCH Radio, where he gave his first radio interview with me, Daryl Johnson CEO of Intercultural Communications.  Ms Lockett said "I take pride in being the one to introduce him to churches and business owners to get the word out about him. When it was suggested for him to be the keynote speaker at a conference, I called him and that was  the first time I met him when he came up for the weekend.  Once I spoke to him one on one, I knew then I would be supporting him."  Lockett elaborated with pride "Let me be clear though, I can't take all the credit for his winning Hillsborough County as their were several other organizations that helped to push him forward"

Notable people and organizations were in attendance for the event;  Organize Florida, Florida SEIU, Florida Immigrant Coalition and Together We Rise.  Radio personality and activist James Cole, Onyx Ski Club representatives Ray & Darele Campbell,  BBIC President Albert Lee, NAACP President Yvette Lewis, School Board Chairwoman Tamara Shamburger, Attorney Norman Harris, city council candidate Ella Coffee and mayoral candidate Topher Morrison.

The Open Cafe hosted the event for Gillum in Tampa Bay.  The Open Cafe is known for good soul food and is a staple in the East Tampa Community. It is run by St. Johns Church on 34th Street and Elder Florence Gainer, along with a host of loyal volunteers.
