THAP Meeting Tackles Community Issues

Rev. Derrick Blue, CEO of THAP and  Charles Young Jr, CFO, met with Captain Calvin Johnson, Lee Burcaw, Pastor James Williams of the Rock COGIC, Lesa Sims of Eckerd Kids, Joel Barnham, Levorna WIlliams, and concerned citizens who are affectionately called THE VILLAGE met to discuss connecting Tampa Police Department with the community businesses and churches.   The goal is  to come up with a holistic approach to community development by addressing housing needs, law enforcement, to engaging the church to creating a working model that can be transferred to other communities to help eradicate crime, while at the same time, building bridges to develop better relationships with law enforcement.

The business and church community will focus on the next generation of children to change perception of law enforcement and the children themselves.  Providing solutions to conversations that were started and never finished.  No longer will we start to talk about issues and never take action.

The closed group  will meet monthly.   One initiative is to start a needs assessment beginning at Mohawk Street in Tampa, using a grant that has been in place the past 12 years with and  through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. Commitments . Another initiative made by law enforcement is to get out and make themselves available to  help the community with needs, such as painting houses, cleaning empty lots, etc.

“We want a true master plan for North East Tampa” said Rev. Derrick Blue.
